(1) Synthesis of Compound A-2: 82 mL of fuming nitric acid (containing 29% SO3) was added to a 150 mL three-necked flask, followed by the addition of 8.2 g (56 mmol) of 1,4-dichlorobenzene (Compound A-11), 0.258 g of I2, and 0.258 g of ICl. The reaction mixture was stirred vigorously for 6 hr at 60-70°C. The reaction was completed with a filtration. After completion of the reaction, the mixture was poured into ice water and the solid product was collected by filtration. The solid was washed sequentially with aqueous sodium bisulfite, aqueous sodium bicarbonate and water. Finally, purification by recrystallization from toluene gave 23.7 g (92% yield) of compound A-2 as a white needle-like solid. | [References]
