Bacterial spores are more resistant to antibiotics and nutritional deficiencies than their vegetative cells and sometimes cause serious problems from the viewpoint of hygiene in clinical treatment and food processing.¹⁾ Spore persistence also plays a major role in the recurrence of infections after antibiotic treatment. Molecules that stimulate germination are termed “germinants”¹⁾ and the efficacy of germinant administration combined with antibiotics have been evaluated (for example, reports by N. Budi et al.^2,3)). Cogerminants are compounds that do not have germination-stimulating activity in themselves but stimulate germination when combined with other compounds. L-Serine has been reported to act as a cogerminant for Clostridium frigidicarnis spores when used with L-lactate (L0165) and cogerminants, NaHCO₃ (S0561) and L-cysteine (C0515).⁴⁾
