A mixture of benzo[ 1,3] dioxol-5-yl-acetic acid methyl ester (1 g, 5.15 mmol) in methanol (2 mL) and 20% aqueous potassium hydroxide (10 mL) were heated at reflux for about 3 hours. Methanol was removed by evaporation, and the aqueous solution was acidified to pH=l with 5% aqueous hydrochloric acid. Standard extractive workup was performed to yield the title product. (910 mg, 99%). 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 6.78-6.70 (m, 3H), 5.94 (s, 2H), 3.57 (s, 2H); LC-MS: m/z=l 79(M-I)".
