General procedure: Diols 6a and 6c were synthesized via reaction of the Grignard reagentprepared from the appropriate aryl bromide (8 mmol) andmagnesium turnings (192 mg, 8 mmol) in THF (30 mL) with 9,10-anthraquinone (416 mg, 2 mmol) in 1,4-dioxane (60 mL).
