Reaction Conditions:
with lithium aluminium tetrahydride in tetrahydrofuran at 0 - 20; for 16 h;
Steps:
To a stirred solution of 1-(4-Methoxyphenyl)-1-cyclopentanecarbonitrile (4.02 g, 20 mmol) in THF (50 mL) cooled to 0° C. was added lithium aluminium hydride (1.52 g, 40 mmol) and the reaction was allowed to warm to room temperature and stirred for 16 h. To the reaction mixture was added cautiously water (2.0 mL) then 2N NaOH (aq) (2 mL). The mixture was filtered and concentrated in vacuo to yield the title compound which was used without further purification (1.07 g, yield: 95%). 1H NMR (CDCl3 300 MHz): ppm 7.12 (d, 2H), 6.80 (d, 2H), 3.71 (s, 2H), 2.62 (s, 3H), 1.88-1.58 (m, 8H).
