(2-Carboxyethyl)dimethylsulfonium Chloride is the hydrochloride salt of Dimethylsulfoniopropionate (D479360), a metabolite produced primarily by marine phytoplankton and is the main precursor to the c
limatically important gas dimethylsulfide (DMS). | [Synthesis]
GENERAL METHOD: A solution was prepared by dissolving 0.99 g (15.9 mmol) of dimethyl sulfide in 3 mL of acetonitrile at room temperature. The solution was slowly added to a solution of 0.5 g (5.3 mmol) of 3-chloropropionic acid dissolved in 5 mL of acetonitrile under stirring. Upon completion of the reaction, the resulting colorless crystal product was collected by filtration and washed several times with ether. Finally, the product was dried under vacuum. | [References]
